Students of the month // January & February 2010

Congratulations to Sierra and Quentin McLean our newest Students of the Month! They are awesome, as you can tell from the pictures!

Quentin McLean is 14 years young. He has one cute dog, Ginger, and a younger sister, Sierra. After playing expert guitar on Rock Band on Xbox 360, Quentin began taking guitar & drum lessons from Sarah. He is the Schoolhouse's most tenacious student. He earns most of his rockstar points because whenever he has trouble playing a tough melody or complicated rhythm, like YouTube's Chin Face theme song, he does not stop until he has it completely mastered, whilst never showing a hint of frustration.

His passions outside of music include producing youtube videos with his sister Sierra and "cubing". Cubing is a well-known term at the Schoolhouse thanks to Quentin, and it describes the solving of 3D puzzles like the Rubik's cube, the Pyraminx, and the Rubik's Magic using complex moves and algorithms. He’s competed at several competitions this past year, most recently at the Chicago Open Feb 2010, where he placed 1st in the Pyraminx with an average time of 7.00 seconds. This is the 2nd fastest time in the USA.

Student of the month // December 2009

Katie is December's Student of the Month at Sarah Fire's Schoolhouse of Rock. Katie is 21 and she’s been playing the piano since she was 14. She started taking classical piano lessons with Sarah 5 months ago. Her repertoire includes Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata and Fur Elise, Bach’s Prelude in C, Chopin’s Prelude in Cm Opus 28, No.20 and his Waltz in C major (Posthumous,) and Erik Satie’s Gymnopedie from “Trois Gymnopedies.” Not only has Katie made outstanding progress since she began taking lessons at the Schoolhouse of Rock but she also plays with remarkable sensitivity and restrain. Mastering both the complexity and technique of Johann Sebastian Bach while simultaneously studying the much more expressive but equally challenging works of Chopin and Beethoven Katie has become an exlemprary pianist. We look forward to hearing forthcoming additions to her already outstanding repretoire. Katie listens to the Cure, AFI, the Birthday Massacre, Katatonia, the Misfits and Beethoven. Katie is an English Major at the U of A and she wants to become a Librarian.
